Talking & Listening
Making Sense!
We all take speaking for granted but what do we actually sound like? Recording our speech, or listening to what we say - as we say it - can have a profound effect on our understanding of how we sound to others. Skills learnt at KS1 and KS2 need to be continually developed at both KS3 and KS4 levels.
The use of cassette recorders in the classroom gives children the opportunity to develop their own talking skills so that they can be clearly understood.
Paying Attention?
Children at KS3 and KS4 need to continue developing the ability to listen as and respond to what they hear.
Group discussions can be improved through the recording process. Children can listen to their own (and their friends) contribution to a discussion and this often helps them to understand their part in conversation.
From this understanding, children can be helped to develop their communication and debating skills.
The Written and the Spoken Word
What just happened then?
Reading English and understanding it are two different things. With the vast collection of audio tapes and CDs available children can get much closer to understanding English Literature than by simply reading it.
Using audio tapes to support English Literature lessons brings the works of great writers to life. Getting children to hear how the language of Shakespeare, Chaucer and Milton sounded makes it easier for them to understand the text.
Playing extracts from audio tapes helps children understand how characters sound and get the best out of a story!
Creative Works
How does this sound?
Recording poems and short stories is a great way to get more children to participate in, and enjoy, the creative writing process.
Recording their words adds to the creative process and provides evidence of their success at each KS 3 and KS4.
