- Used throughout the world (except Scotland and Northern Ireland). Unlike a domestic cassette tape recorder, Audio Active Comparative (AAC) recorders, use both halves (or tracks) of the tape during recording; in this case, recording the teacher on one track and the student on the other. It is ideally suited for assessment purposes, since the teacher questions cannot be erased by the student.

- Scotland and Northern Ireland only. Audio Active recorders allow teachers and students to record on the same track. The student can also record answers in response to teacher assessment questions.
