Cleaning Cassette Heads
As cassette tape rubs across the playback and record heads, a brown deposit of loose particles may be left on the heads and capstan wheel. Cheap low quality tape will do this very quickly!
The build up of this deposit will cause a loss of sound quality and even lead to tapes becoming damaged or "chewed up".
With the machine switched on and the cassette door open, press the play button. This will move the heads up and engage the capstan wheel.
Clean the cassette heads with a cotton wool stick soaked with cassette head cleaner (denatured alcohol) or a little methylated spirits.
Gently wipe over the heads to remove the deposits (as illustrated above).
Be careful not to trap the cotton wool stick between the rollers when cleaning the capstan wheel.
Allow the cassette heads and capstan head a chance to dry for a few minutes before playing tapes.
